How to enter environmental data in Darwin

Create Data Points

Data points are the environmental measurements and activities that Darwin uses to calculate your biodiversity footprint. They represent everything from raw material purchases to energy consumption and land use.

Data Points table

Data Point Structure

Each data point contains:

FieldDescriptionExample
LabelDescriptive name"Cow milk supply from Farm 1"
ValueNumeric measurement6,000,000
UnitMeasurement unitkg, m², kWh, t-CO2-Eq
Related EntityWhich entity this belongs to"Farm 1"
ScopeDirect (1) or Upstream (3)"3 - Upstream"
TypeData categoryProduct/Materials, Pressures
SubtypeSpecific classificationProcurement, Climate Change
Model Usedecoinvent/EXIOBASE match"cow milk (GLO)"

Add a Data Point

Go to Collect > All Data Points in the sidebar.

Click the Add Row

Click the + button at the bottom of the table to add a new row, or click in an empty area.

Enter Collection Data

Fill in the left section (Collection):

  • Label: A clear, descriptive name
  • Value: The numeric amount
  • Unit: Select the appropriate unit
  • Related Entity: Choose the entity this data belongs to
  • Scope: Select Scope 1 (direct) or Scope 3 (upstream/downstream)

Configure Modeling

Darwin will attempt to auto-match your data:

  • Type: Product/Materials, Pressures, or Commodity
  • Subtype: More specific categorization
  • Model Used: The ecoinvent or EXIOBASE process matched

Click on the Model Used field to search and select a different process if the auto-match isn't correct.

Set Contribution Rule

Choose how this data point contributes to the assessment:

  • Add-up: Adds to existing values (default for materials)
  • Replace: Replaces calculated values with your direct measurement
  • Replace (Propagation): For pressures that propagate through the supply chain

Data Types

Product/Materials

Physical goods and materials entering your supply chain:

Understanding the Table Sections

The data points table is organized into three sections:

Collection (Left)

Raw data you enter - labels, values, units, entities.

Modelling (Center)

How Darwin interprets your data - type classification and process matching.

Accounting (Right)

How the data contributes to calculations - contribution rules and conflict resolution.

Launch Assessment

After entering your data points:

  1. Click Launch Assessment in the top-right corner
  2. Darwin will process your data through the impact models
  3. Results appear in the Footprint views

If you see data points with warnings, check the Rules Management page to resolve conflicts.

Download Template

For bulk data entry:

  1. Click Download template at the top of the page
  2. Fill in the spreadsheet following the format
  3. Use Import to upload your data

Units Reference

Common units supported by Darwin:

CategoryUnits
Masskg, t, g, lb
Aream², ha, km²
Volumem³, L
EnergykWh, MJ, GJ
GHGkg CO₂ Eq, t CO₂ Eq
Currency€, $ (millions)

Next Steps

After entering your data:

  1. Check and resolve rules for any conflicts
  2. View your impacts in the assessment views
  3. Create scenarios to model alternatives
